High-alcohol beers such as old elk, strong ales, and rich, strong, warming beers are currently spending their day in the sun. In part because it has cooled recently. And in part because … Okay, about everything We need some additional ABVs.

What’s an old man, you ask? Technically, an old man is one of the descendants of a strong family. These beers are rich, masculine and usually deep in appearance. They are usually on the very high end of the ABV range (for beer) and really vow to intensify the flavors.

“It’s an old-fashioned Old English style with some sweetness, malt, dark fruits, and a little bitterness to balance it out,” explains Isaac Rice, head bartender at Urban Farmer in Philadelphia. “This rich-style beer is great for cold weather, but still has some welcome fruits like figs and raisins.”

To find the best old ales, strong ales, and other warming beers to drink at the close of winter, we asked our favorite bartenders about their choice. Check below and thaw until winter to stay at the end.

    Founder Curmudusion

    The founders

Beverage Director at Andy Chao in St. Louis, Andy Printy

The founders Courmudusion I am one of the few familiar in this category. It is brewed with jaggery and then aged in oak barrels. It is malicious and has a lot of rustic dark fruit and sweet lumbar. With about 10% ABV, it drinks almost as much as barley alcohol, so pace yourself.

    Cigar city opal

    Cigar city

Anthony Aviles, general manager of Jack Dusty in Sarasota, Florida

Cigar City Opal – A scarlet color that is almost blurred. It is spiteful and hyper-rich but very light on the palate. Although it contains baking spice flavors such as vanilla, toffee, etc., it does not coat your mouth after making each sip for the perfect winter drink.

    Theakstone old weird

USBG Bartender in Frederick Yarm, Boston

The Old Stone of Thekstone is a wonderful match in the winters with its deep and dry fruit notes. I have an earthy, herbal finish with chocolate, raisins, cherries, toffee, walnuts, and licorice flavors that sound similar to Belgian dubbel.

    Smuttynose Really Old Brown Dog

Benjamin Pozar, bartender at Fogo de Chao in Philadelphia

Smuttynose Really Old Brown Dog fits the bill for this. It has a blissful dark character of caramel toffee and dried red fruits. It can be a brown color, but the high alcohol and the creamy, rich flavor tick all the old ale boxes.
