Two people were taken to hospital after being shot Monday after a shooting at a Virginia high school, police said.
Newport News police said the injuries were not considered life-threatening. It was not immediately clear whether the injured were students or staff. Heritage High School.
The students were pulled out and sent to a nearby tennis court, where parents were being instructed to meet them. Videos shared on social media showed students and adults gathering by the fence. Mental health counselors were present on the spot.
Police said reports of shooters active in other schools in the city were false.
“Closely monitoring horrific reports of a shooting at Heritage High School in Newport News,” US Sen. Mark Warner said on Twitter. “We look forward to learning more while praying for the health and safety of all those involved.”
Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said on twitter that he and his team were in close contact with the first responders.Virginia Representative Bobby Scott said His staff on Twitter was monitoring the situation.
According to the Newport News Public School, Heritage High School has approximately 1,300 students. The students returned to class on 8 September and were in their second full week at school.
Newport News is located at the southeastern end of the Virginia Peninsula, north of Norfolk.
