3 Dead in Shooting at Publix Supermarket in Florida


A woman, a child and a man were found dead from gunshot wounds inside a public grocery store in Palm Beach County on Thursday morning, officials said. He said a man with a gun was also among the dead.

The bodies of three people, including a child, were found inside a public grocery store in Palm Beach County, Fla., on Thursday morning, according to officials who said they had all been fatally shot.

Officers were called to the store in Royal Palm Beach, Fla. around 11:39 a.m. Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. It was not immediately clear who fired the shots, but the sheriff’s office said “the shooter is among the dead.”

It was not immediately clear what caused the bullets or whether anyone else was injured.

“This is not an active shooter situation,” said Teri Barbera, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office. “Detectives are in the early stages of determining what led to the shooting.”

The sheriff’s office said officers found the bodies of a man, a woman and a child upon entering the store. Their names and ages were not immediately released. Officials did not say whether the three men knew each other.

The store is in a shopping center called Crossroads near Okeechobee Boulevard and Royal Palm Beach Boulevard. The village of Royal Palm Beach is about 12 miles west of Palm Beach, Fla.

“Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragedy,” Publix spokeswoman Maria Bruce said in a statement. “We are cooperating with local law enforcement.”

Helicopter footage from local TV stations showed a heavy police presence, with around 15 police cars at the scene.

An employee at a nearby Dollar Tree store said the plaza was on lockdown.

62-year-old Joy Mendoza told The. told Surya Prahari that he was pulling into the parking lot on the way to the public, when he saw police cruisers and officers, some in tactical gear, approaching the store.

“I saw them running inside, I didn’t get out of the vehicle,” he said. “They just kept coming. Cruiser after cruiser, ambulance after ambulance, fire truck after fire truck.”
