Carl, on the latest episode of The Daily Beast podcast”new unusual,Recalls the “rather bizarre” Oval Office exchange with the then-president in early March 2020.
Carl was the president of the association at the time and did not invite Trump to the April 25 annual bash that traditionally gathers journalists and newsmakers together.
“I was unsure whether I was going to invite them,” said Carl, author of “Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show,” which includes Diverse contingency Disclosures About the last days of the Trump White House.
“On the one hand, every president since Warren Harding went to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and was always invited,” Carl said. “Trump was the only person who wasn’t there yet (as president). But on the other hand he declared the press an enemy of the people. And did we really want to have him for dinner?”
According to Carl, Trump entered the Oval Office, and it was clear that “he wants me to beg him to come. And I’m not going to do that.”
Trump “suggested that he’s very open to coming and I just say, ‘Look, if you decide to come, you know, that’s okay. We’ll welcome you. If you don’t want to come,’ If we decide, we will respect that decision. But I wouldn’t even like I didn’t even ask,” Carl recalled.
Then came an even more strange turn.
Carl said Trump turned to Associated Press White House reporter Zeke Miller, who was then vice president of the correspondents’ union, and halfway through adopting a false voice: “Jonathan, what’s with that? He is like my son. ‘Do you love your father? I do not know. Of course, he loves his father.’ Children.”
“That’s exactly what he said,” said Carl. “At first, for a flash, I thought he was comparing me to Don Jr. But no, he was comparing me to the Baron.”
It was “rather bizarre”, he said.
