Coco Gough vs Jasmine Paulini Preview
American teenager Coco Gough took Jasmine Paulini in the first round of the WTA 500 Adelaide International on Tuesday.
On the WTA tour in late 2019 and early 2020, Gough won on the big stage. However, the 16-year-old stock has declined slightly over the past few months.
Gauff started the 2021 season in Abu Dhabi, losing in the second round. She He then defeated Jill Teichman to reach the second round of the Australian Open, but Elina Svitolina bowed without any resistance.
This week in Adelaide, the American presented a tough challenge in the final round of qualification against Kaza Juwan. Goff recovered from a one-sided loss, winning the jury 6-3, and had his first meeting with Jasmine Paolini.
Paolini is a mainstay on the WTA tour in both singles and doubles, and has a few high-profile wins under his belt. But the Italian’s start to the 2021 season has been far from ideal, with early-round losses in all of his tournaments to date.
Like Gauff, Paolini also had to drop out of a set margin in his final qualifying match – against Astro Sharma.
Coco Gough vs Jasmine Paulini head-to-head
The first round encounter in Adelaide is the first professional meeting between Coco Gauff and Jasmine Paolin, so they currently head 0–0.
Coco Gough vs Jasmine Paulini Prediction
Coco Gauff and Jasmine Paolini were close to each other in the rankings, and they are still in a similar vein of form.
Gough has a highly effective all-court game, and his movement has been the most important aspect of his career to date. The American would be one of two freshmen, noting that Paolini had to battle through back-to-back three-set matches in qualifying.
Gough will try to take the initiative in the match with his variety, quick footwork and efficient shot selection. However, Paolini’s skill with his defensive skills from behind the court could cause some problems for the teenager.
Prediction: Coco Gough won in three sets.
