Donald Trump said Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez makes old men in the halls of Congress “tremble with fear” because her supporters are just like her, a new book claims.
The former president reportedly commented in a 2019 speech to 100 business leaders, including Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and executives from JPMorgan, Boeing and BlackRock.
“Let me tell you something about the AOC. Let me tell you something about him. I’ve seen him walk into the halls of Congress, and all I see is these old men trembling with fear – whenever they see him So they tremble with fear,” Trump said.
“You want to know why? Because the AOC has a base just like me.”
The observations were revealed in the new book of Washington Examiner Journalist David Drucker, In Trump’s shadow: the fight for 2024 and the future of the GOP, a preview copy of which was provided daily Mail before its release on October 19.
Mr Trump’s one-liners hit differently at closed-door business roundtables than at his MAGA rallies, with Mr Drucker reporting that the audience only responded with snarky laughter.
The diverse business leaders gathered included the then-president’s entourage, which reportedly included Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, economic adviser Larry Kudlow, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and her daughter Ivanka Trump.
The book said Mr Trump was making an early re-election pitch after Democrats regained control of the House of Representatives in 2018.
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez defeated Democrat Joe Crowley in the primary and won her seat in New York’s reliably Democratic district, and ever since her supporters have been calling on her to challenge Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in a similar fashion.
According to the new book, Mr Trump said, “If you want to stay in business, you definitely want to see me again.”
“You’ve got this Green New Deal. It’s totally insane. It’ll completely shut down American energy. And it’s from this failed geek, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. They call her AOC.”
Mr Drucker writes that Mr Trump admired his fellow New York local, whom he respected for “establishing himself as a leading progressive with a national reach”.
