Speaking to reporters at Gitega prison, Burundi’s vice president, Prosper Bazombanza, said at least 12 people died of suffocation as they tried to escape from burning buildings.

At least 26 others died of serious injuries, he said. Bzombanja did not comment on the cause of the fire.

but in one statement on twitterBurundi’s interior ministry said an electrical short circuit caused the fire. It confirmed that at least 38 prisoners had been killed and said that at least 59 others had been wounded.

A local resident who was near the scene at the time of the tragedy told Reuters that many of the dead were elderly prisoners.

The resident said that he saw the bodies being taken away by ambulance from the jail.

In August, a fire broke out in the same jail, the reason for which was also said to be an electrical issue. There was no casualty in that incident.
