Rafael Nadal vs Alex D Minauer Preview
Spain repeated their 2021 ATP Cup campaign against hosts Australia in the semi-finals of the previous edition, losing 3–0 to the Australian team.
Like last time, Rafael Nadal and Alex de Minaur are once again the top-ranked players of their respective countries. The two would square off against each other on the evening of February 2.
However, it is pertinent to note that the Spain vs Australia fixture will first see Roberto Bautista taking Agut as John Milman. For example, Nadal’s match against De Meinauer would potentially be a decider.
This will be Rafael Nadal’s first competitive match after a shock defeat to Daniel Medvedev in the ATP final in November. The Spaniards recently played in the Adelaide event, where they defeated Dominic Thiem in straight sets, but there is a big difference between an exhibition and a competitive match.
That said, Nadal had a considerable glimpse of his power and timing against Thiem, often with sharp angles at will. The World No 2 will be expected to take that form in their match against Alex de Minauer.
When the two played against each other in last year’s ATP Cup, Rafael Nadal found himself under the gun. The young Australian eloped Nadal for the first half of the match, and it was not until late in the second set that the Spaniard finally managed to break his opponent’s serve.
With Alex de Minaur in form so far in 2021, the youngster could become a major threat to Rafael Nadal this time. The 21-year-old has greatly improved his attacking game, and this was visible during his run at the Antalya Open where he won the title by only dragging one set all week.
Rafael Nadal vs Alex de Minaur head-to-head
Rafael Nadal beats Alex de Minaur 3–0. His three wins have been in Wimbledon (2018), Australian Open (2019) and ATP Cup (2020).
Rafael Nadal vs Alex D Minaur Prediction
Alex de Minauer’s backhand has improved significantly since last year. He Now Crosscourt can go toe-to-toe with Rafael Nadal in doubles, while turning things around on occasion with down-the-line redirection.
After saying this, Nadal will open the court with both his heavy forehand, crosscourt and down the line. De Minaur has arguably the fastest pair of legs on the tour, but to avoid giving the Spaniard the space he would need to be precise with the court position he needs to schedule rallies.
The Australian is a very clever player, and he often finds ways to dominate the most experienced pros on the tour. He It is expected that Nadal’s boundary will be tested, but it is unlikely that the Mallorcan will lose their first competitive match of the year.
Prediction: Rafael Nadal won in three sets.
