BBC Three will return as a TV channel in early February 2022.

Broadcast regulator Ofcom on Thursday (November 25) approved the return of the channel, which will be available on Freeview, Sky, Virgin and Freesat.

The channel’s acceptance comes with a new trade deal between the BBC and PACT for production by independent producers, which aims to diversify its production with “two-thirds of the extended program being outside London”.

Max Rumani, Director of Business Affairs at Pact, said: “Our members are delighted to see the return of the Linear Channel and opportunities for producers to showcase the great creativity of the UK independent production sector.

“This is a great example of the Pact and the BBC working together to deliver positive outcomes for all.”

BBC Three was originally discontinued in 2016, when it was replaced with an online-only version under the belief that it would better appeal to a younger audience.
