The US president did not refute Barack Obama’s claim that Britain would be “at the back of the queue” for a post-Brexit deal, saying he would discuss trade with his British counterpart “a little bit”.

Before the meeting, Mr Johnson acknowledged that a post-Brexit free trade agreement between countries was not a “priority” for the Biden administration.

It is believed that the minister could scuttle his hopes by signing an existing agreement between the US, Mexico and Canada to increase trade across the Atlantic.

Mr Johnson will conclude his visit to the US on Wednesday by addressing the United Nations General Assembly and asking the world to be alert to the threat of climate change.

“It is time for humanity to grow up. It is time for us to listen to the warnings of scientists,” he would say.

World must ‘grow up’ and tackle climate change: PM

The Cop26 climate summit in Glasgow should be “a turning point for humanity”, Boris Johnson will tell world leaders on Wednesday.

Addressing the UN General Assembly, the British prime minister will say the world needs to “grow up” on the scale of the climate crisis.

“The world – this precious blue sphere with its eggshell layer and desire for an atmosphere – is no indestructible toy, some bouncy plastic romper room against which we can hurt ourselves to our hearts’ content.

“Daily, weekly, we are doing such irreversible damage that long before a million years is complete we will have effectively made this beautiful planet uninhabitable – not only for us but for many other species.”

Biden dashes hopes of a quick UK-US trade deal

Joe Biden is not committed to a post-Brexit free trade deal with Britain, leaving British ministers hoping for a quick deal.

Instead, he said he would discuss business “a little bit” with Boris Johnson in a meeting on Tuesday and that the issue would have to be “worked out”.

Mr Johnson previously acknowledged that a deal was not a priority for the US, as the Biden administration had “a lot of fish to fry”.
