Biden laughs as he’s roasted by SNL’s Michael Che at Kennedy Center Honors

President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden attended the Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday, the US president’s first appearance at the event because of former President Donald Trump’s repeated refusal to attend star-studded events .

many current and former saturday night live Cast mate, host and writer appeared in honor of show producer Lorne Michaels, along with other cultural figures, including actresses Bette Midler, singers Joni Mitchell and Justino Diaz, and producer Berry Gordy.

The event was also the second Kennedy Center Honors to be held in the 2021 calendar year after the 2020 Honors was postponed and held in May due to concerns arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Biden laughed together of snl Michael Che, who gave the elder statesman a light ribbing by suggesting that the event was being held before his bedtime.

“Joking in front of President Biden is intimidating. I have to keep reminding myself, there’s no way he’s still awake,” quipped Mr. Che.

He also added, to the surprise laughter from the crowd: “It’s so nerve-wracking. I haven’t been back in DC since January 6th.”

Making a reference to valuables stolen from President Nancy Pelosi’s office, Mr. Che joked, “It’s not what you think… I wanted a new laptop.”

SNL Alum Jimmy Fallon added in ribbing in a joke by Mr. Michaels about power in the entertainment industry over the decades: “The most powerful man in the world … and joking in front of President Biden is a little intimidating.”

Mr Trump’s absence from events of previous years was noted by opener David Letterman, who took the opportunity to make a joke about the lack of leadership in the Trump White House.

“It’s great to see the president’s box being occupied once again,” said Mr. Letterman, “and so is the case with the Oval Office.”

The night was not entirely centered around the comedy. The event saw a tribute to Ms. Midler by Billy Porter, honoring Mr. Diaz, and a performance of Ms. Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” by singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding. Motown legends Smokey Robinson and Oprah Winfrey honored Mr. Gordy, praising him for discovering hit acts including Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.

Mr Biden also made remarks of his own, and took the opportunity to taunt Mr Michaels’ long list of SNL Guest stars and cast members who have attempted to deal with the 46th President’s impressions for the show.

“He’s trying to get seven guys to play me,” he joked of Mr. Michaels.

The president said: “Laughter is good for the soul. If you can’t laugh at yourself we’re in big trouble…and you make me laugh at yourself a lot.”

The program will be available for viewing later this month; CBS will air the full episode on Wednesday, December 22 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.
