President Joe Biden promised Russian President Vladimir Putin that the United States and its allies would impose strong economic sanctions in the event of a military escalation in Ukraine.
The White House said, “President Biden voiced the deep concerns of the United States and our European allies regarding the growth of Russia’s military around Ukraine and clarified that the United States and our allies remain in a position of military growth in the face of strong economic and other conditions.” Will respond with measures.” Readout said of his video conference.
The readout said Mr Biden reiterated Ukraine’s sovereignty and called for de-escalation and diplomacy. According to a senior administration official, Mr Biden’s meeting with Mr Putin came as the US president planned his summit for democracy with more than 100 governments.
Earlier this week, the United States shared intelligence with its European Union counterparts that Russia is prepared to invade Ukraine as Russian forces largely border the two countries. Tensions between the two countries are the latest after Russia annexed Crimea after protests ousted the Russian-friendly president in 2014.
“With regard to the financial sanctions, we have discussed closely with our European partners what we would collectively do in the event of a major Russian military escalation in Ukraine,” a White House official said. “And we believe we have a way forward that will include substantial economic counterintelligence by both Europeans and the United States that would inflict significant and severe economic damage on the Russian economy, should they choose to proceed.”
The official said the measures would serve as a deterrent to discourage military action.
“We believe that there is a path here that will allow us to send a clear message to Russia that there will be real and meaningful and lasting costs for choosing to proceed, if they choose to proceed with military escalation in Ukraine. ..”
Mr Biden spoke to the leaders of France, Italy, Germany and Great Britain this week and all countries underscored the importance of Ukraine’s sovereignty.
But the conference got off to a rocky start, as Mr Biden messed with his microphone, leading Russian state media to mock the situation after it was broken up by the Daily Mail. This moment defused the tension between the two leaders.
