Bill Gates was told to stop ‘inappropriate’ emails with Microsoft employee in 2008, report says

Microsoft confirmed the Journal’s report to Granthshala Business but declined to comment. Microsoft spokesman Frank Shaw told the Journal that “while flirting, [the emails] were not openly sexual, but were considered inappropriate,” and the employee never complained about the incident.

Brigitte Arnold, a spokeswoman for Gates, denied the claims in a written statement to the Journal. “These claims are false, recycled rumors from sources with no direct knowledge, and in some cases there are significant conflicts of interest,” she said. Representatives for Gates did not respond to multiple requests for comment from Granthshala Business.

Gates, one of the world’s richest people, was the chief executive officer of Microsoft until 2000. Relinquished day-to-day duties at the company in 2008 and served as chairman until 2014. In March 2020, Gates gave up his seat on Microsoft’s board, saying he wanted to devote more time to philanthropy.

“Microsoft received a concern in late 2019 that Bill Gates sought to begin an intimate relationship with a company employee in the year 2000,” a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to Granthshala Business in May. “A board committee reviewed the concern assisted by an outside law firm to conduct a full investigation. Throughout the investigation, Microsoft provided extensive support to the employee who expressed the concern.”


A Gates spokesman called the 2000 relationship “an affair that ended amicably about 20 years ago,” in a statement to the Journal at the time. And said the company’s investigation was not related to Gates’ decision to leave the board.
