Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan will remain in jail till at least October 20 in the cruise ship drug bust case.
Mr Khan and seven others were arrested 10 days ago by India’s top drug enforcement agency, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
On 3 October, NCB officials in plain clothes raided a luxury cruise ship in the city of Mumbai. At the time, the NCB said it had recovered 13 grams of cocaine, 21 grams of charas, 22 tablets of MDMA and 5 grams of mephedrone and Rs 130,000 (£1,260) in cash during the raid.
The hearing of Mr Khan’s bail plea – the third since his arrest – began on Wednesday and continued till Thursday. Sessions court judge VV Patil reserved his order on the 23-year-old’s plea, leaving him with no legal option for Sahara until the order is passed next week.
Representing the NCB, Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh referred to Mr Khan’s WhatsApp chat and alleged that he has been consuming drugs regularly for three years. The NCB has said that Mr Khan remains in custody during the investigation into his alleged role in international drug trafficking.
The defense said Mr Khan had nothing to do with any foreign drug operation. His lawyer Amit Desai said the Narcotics Bureau did not provide any information on how its investigation could be affected if Mr Khan is granted bail.
Mr Desai said there was no message or conversation on his client’s mobile phone about the cruise ship rave party. Furthermore, he pointed out that no medicine was found on Mr. Khan himself.
Several political leaders, journalists and Bollywood actors have come out in support of Khan.
Soon after the bail hearing, #AryanKhanBail started trending on Twitter as many condemned the decision to keep Khan in jail.
Supreme Court lawyer Karuna Nandy tweeted: “The bail hearing makes it clear that his blood test was clean, allegations based only on straws like membership of a WhatsApp group. Either NCB has made a mistake, is hiding, or it is vengeance.
Journalist Ankur Pathak wrote: “After hearing some of NCB’s arguments in court today and god, they honestly seem like disgruntled housing society uncles who scold kids for making too much noise.”
In an interview with veteran actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha Indian Express Said: “This time they have Aryan Khan To play, as he is the son of Shahrukh Khan and got a chance to score with the actor. “
Mr Khan plays voice over artist in Simmba the lion king Indian version.
Aryan Khan is the eldest son of Shahrukh Khan. The star has a 21-year-old daughter Suhana Khan and an 8-year-old son AbRam Khan.
