Boris Johnson has called on Emmanuel Macron to “catch up” and “donez-moi un brake” after France’s furious reaction to Britain’s defense deal with the US and Australia.
Paris has dubbed last week’s Ocas agreement a “stab in the back” as it saw Canberra sign a 56bn euro deal for French diesel-electric submarines in favor of nuclear-powered ships from the US.
French ambassadors from Washington and Canberra were recalled, and a senior minister in the Macron administration said the same response was not received by London simply because Britain was a “junior partner” in the deal.
Mr Johnson tried to assuage France’s anger earlier this week and insisted Macron had no reason to worry about the Auckus deal and expressed his “unbreakable” commitment to Britain’s cross-Channel neighbour. Declared love and admiration.
But speaking in Washington today, he took a more confrontational line, expressing jealousy of the French stance.
