“The next thing I see is a bunch of people with riot shields with ‘US Marshals’ written all over my face, pointing handguns,” Beckwith told the publication. He claimed that he was handcuffed and pulled aside.

The US Marshal showed Beckwith a photograph of himself, which was taken by an employee of the lodge and sent to the authorities. Laundry and Beckwith are both white with a similar slim build and both have shaved heads and beards. A marshal also pointed to Beckwith’s left ear, which had a “notch” similar to that of a laundry.

Raising suspicion, Beckwith and Bretman had booked the cabin with a credit card linked to a New York ID—and Petito was originally from Long Island.

As compensation for the mistake, the couple was given a one-night free stay and a free breakfast buffet at the lodge.

Last Friday, Petito’s father Joseph posted an image from inside Bridger-Teton, showing that they had scattered his ashes in the national park.
