New York – The NYPD said a law enforcement task force arrested a man on suspicion of shooting his ex-girlfriend in the face, killing her and their unborn child.
Police took 40-year-old Justin Soriano into custody “without incident” at a friend’s home in the Bronx on Thursday morning, Chief of Detectives Jimmy Essig said at a news conference. Police charged him with the death of 31-year-old Shanice Young, who was eight months pregnant.
“The incident shook the conscience of the city,” Essig said.
Youth and four children parked on West 128th Street harlem After 1 p.m. Sunday, Essig said. They were coming home from a baby shower organized in Young’s honour. As Young and her boyfriend were unloading presents from the car, Soriano appeared.
“There was an argument – the current boyfriend was at the scene,” Essig said. “Mr. Soriano brandishes a shotgun, chases the new lover – and then comes back, confronts Miss Young, and shoots her, hitting her in the face, killing her.”

He said the violence took place in front of four children, who were helping to unload the car.
The chief said Soriano has had more than a dozen prior arrests.
According to the NYPD, he also faces criminal charges of possessing a weapon, acting in a harmful way to a child, and making threats.
Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said, “Our hope is that this fear starts the process of closure for the family, and is also important to the community for this horrific, horrific crime.”
