Burger King Impossible Foods is expected to be the first fast-food chain to test plant-based chicken nuggets.

11, the fast-food chain owned by Restaurant Brands International will test plant-based nuggets in three select markets: Des Moines, Iowa; Boston and Miami.

However, this isn’t the first time the fast-food chain and California-based provider of meat substitutes have teamed up. In 2019, Burger King began selling the plant-based Impossible Whopper nationwide after successful trials in seven markets.

In fact, a report of inMarket inSights found that restaurants testing Impossible Whoppers experienced a significant increase in foot traffic.

“In 2019, we became the first quick-service restaurant to serve up the award-winning, plant-based Impossible Patty and offer the iconic Impossible Whopper,” said Eli Dotti, Burger King North America’s chief marketing officer, in a statement. ”

Impossible Foods and its competitor Beyond Meat both found success with realistic plant-based burgers. Now, they are now trying to replicate this in the rapidly growing but crowded market for plant-based chicken nuggets.

Sales of frozen, plant-based chicken tenders and nuggets in the US rose 29% to $112 million in the 52 weeks ended August 28, according to Nielsen IQ. Sales of traditional frozen tenders and nuggets rose 17% to $1.1 billion in the same period.

Impossible Foods began selling soy-based nuggets in September at Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons and other groceries. They will be in 10,000 stores by the end of this year.
