California Governor Gavin Newsom has completely defeated a recall to remove him from office as part of a row over his handling of the COVID pandemic in the state and his commitment to voters.
With more than two-thirds of the ballots counted, Newsom enjoys a comfortable 30-point+ lead, with a majority of voters choosing “no” on the ballot that asks whether to remove him from office. Democrats have framed the election as part of a national fight for party values and continued threats from “Trumpism”.
She cast the vote as a victory for science, women’s rights and other liberal issues, and ensures that the country’s most populous state will remain under Democratic control for at least the next few years. Republican Larry Elder, who was competing to take over from Newsom when he lost the recall, has called on supporters to “be kind in defeat.”
