Thirty-five states and one US territory will convert to 10-digit dialing on Sunday.

According to Federal Communications CommissionCallers in the 82 area code must punch in their recipient’s area code before dialing their phone number. Local phone calls made without an area code may not connect.

The FCC is making changes to pave the way for a three-digit national suicide prevention lifeline nationwide. From 16 July 2022, callers can be connected to suicide prevention and mental health counselors by dialing “988”.

The 10 digit requirement for local calls is not a new strategy. Some areas require callers to use area codes to accommodate the growing need for more phone numbers since the early 1990s.

Many municipalities have multiple local area codes.
