Chuck Schumer’s father, Abe, dead at 98, senator says

Abe Schumer, the father of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, died Wednesday night at the age of 98, the New York senator confirmed.

“In many ways – he represented the greatest generation,” Schumero said in a statement on social media.“No matter how hard whatever was thrown at him, he did his job, never complaining. A wonderful husband, parents, grandparents, great-grandfathers. We love him and will miss him.

Schumer, who was born on Thanksgiving Day in 1950, told reporters It was earlier this week in Brooklyn that his father was hospitalized on Long Island for a heart procedure. The father and son had a close relationship and Schumer planned to spend time with them on Thursday.


“My dad, Abe, is 98. He proudly served our country in the Pacific in WWII. And I’m grateful for all he did for our country and our family,” says Schumer, 71. Tweeted a few weeks ago on Veterans Day,

Abe served in Burma during WWII, and took over a small sabotage business from his father when he returned to Brooklyn – a job he hated – to support his wife Selma and their three children, Schumer said In Congress on his father’s 95th birthday before Father’s Day.

“He gave us the idea that we could follow our dreams by standing on his strong and weary shoulders,” he said.
