Coronation Street fans are in tears after Johnny Connor drowned after confessing his love for ex-wife Jenny.

The businessman – played by actor Richard Hawley in the ITV soap – bravely saves Jenny’s life after she falls into the sinkhole.

But after he is safe, Johnny’s body gives up and he dies while drowning in the old sewer system.


“There’s something wrong, he’s not moving,” said Jenny as Johnny failed to pull the rope.

Jenny yells at him begging him to fight for survival: “Say something Johnny – are you okay?

“Listen to me Johnny, they’re here. They’re going to be with you soon. You don’t need to talk to me, but look at me.

“Just raise your head Johnny. Johnny look at me. Here they are.”

But in a disastrous scene, Johnny can hear the voice of his late son, Aidan, calling him dad.

He had previously had visions of Aidan as a symptom of his MS.

Actor Shayne Ward’s soap may reveal archive sound used for the heart-wrenching scene.

As soon as she realized what was going on, Jenny shouted: “Johnny please you just need to stop. I love you.”

After telling Jenny that he loves her too, Johnny slips under the water and leaves Jenny screaming in agony.

In the heartbreaking scenes, Carla sees Jenny being brought out without Johnny and it dawns on her what had happened.

Carla burst into tears and the audience was with her.

One wrote: “Oh, heartbroken to hear Johnny call Edens’ name.”

A second said: “I can’t believe the lovely Johnny Connor is gone!”

Another added: “Poor Johnny, I’m heartbroken and when we heard Aiden’s voice sound good it was her!! RIP Johnny”
