Coronation Street’s David Nielsen has broken his silence on his heartbreaking exit as Roy Cropper from the ITV soap.

For almost three decades, the 72-year-old actor has played the legendary character, however, it is all coming to an unfortunate end.

Last week when Roy bid farewell to his niece Neena in heartfelt and emotional scenes, fans of the show came in tears.

Despite hints that he made his final appearance on the show, audiences were hopeful that Roy might decide against moving to South America and return to Cobbles.

However, David suggests that Roy may leave the Manchester-based soap for good – much to the dismay of fans.

“I’m 72, obviously,” he added inside the soap,

“When Corey broadcast Norris’ funeral, we had a scene in which Chariot was pulling – and because of Malcolm Hebden, I thought ‘I’m really sorry I didn’t get a chance to work with him again. met’.

“But it has two exits for me — one for the character and one for David. Hopefully, they don’t match — maybe they will.

“I know there will be backlash when Roy leaves. It’s a big part of your life and a big part of that popular culture. He will be remembered for a long time.”

As a strong staple of UK television for decades, David said he still finds it “amazing” when he is recognized.

He continued: “When my son was in university, I remember going to take my stuff for a year off and realize that I was in my 30s like everyone else’s life – this one It’s very strange.”

Roy recently left Corey in heart-wrenching scenes where he had an emotional conversation with his relative, Neena.

He told her: “One day, I hope you will find it in your heart to forgive me.

“This is my only hope of peace. I must go away and make atonement.”

“As you know, I’ve gifted you my possessions so that you always have a roof over your head and money coming in and a place to call yourself in such a more caring community.”

Nina then went to open the door, but she had one last thing to say.

She shared: “You know when I was beaten you were the one who brought me back.

“It was your voice that I could hear as I went in and out of consciousness. My dad left me because he had no choice. Please don’t do that to me, Roy.”

“You are the only person in the whole world that I trust and love.”
