The 81-year-old recounted how he was taking a trip down memory lane by traveling to Hillsley in Gloucestershire, where he first filmed 50 years ago.

He talked about the poem with a guest who was associated with the village, and the man said: “I have a poem of mine, I’ll read it to you if you want?”

He then began reciting his poem before John said: “He was beautiful.”

However, some Countryphile viewers were not so impressed with the format of the episode.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: “This is s**t. It was better when it was mainly about farming and wildlife in the country.

“Tonight, it’s about the fr*** in poetry! Other episodes have ‘social issues.’ What the fuck**t!”

Another addition: “Do they have views over? #countryfile”.

A third tweeted: “Oh bore of writer bloc… #countryfile”.

Others, however, enjoyed the segment, and brought John back to their screens.

One wrote: “John Craven on #countryfile is a very cool and reassuring watch. He assures you for a moment or two that all is well in the world.”

Another addition: “John Craven is still going strong.”

Many viewers were delighted to see John on screen, even if they did not enjoy the poem
