Count on a dog to follow its owner everywhere, even to the airport.
A Texas couple realized this recently when they found their pet Chihuahua locked in one of their suitcases.
Christie and Jared Owens were checking their bags at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport late last month when they were told their luggage was overweight. They could either pay for extra baggage or rearrange their luggage to be lighter before taking their flight from Texas to Las Vegas. He chose the second option – and he was glad he did.
He opened the suitcase, and “Your boot has a Chihuahua out!” Remembered Mr Owens in a Facebook post. His five-pound rescue Chihuahua Ikey was hidden inside his shepherd’s shoe. “Unreal! Let the conspiracy begin!”
“Just coming out of the boot Ikey’s little head is wiggling up and down with its tongue. I wish we had a picture of our faces when we opened it up and saw it,” Mr. Owens said. Washington Post.
The couple has two children, three dogs, a rabbit and lots of fish, naturally giving them a full home. “We were just looking for a little romantic getaway, a little getaway,” Ms. Owens said.
The couple suspect that when Mr. Owens made the final round of packing on the morning of his trip to keep his shoes, Icky broke into their bag. Ms. Owen had already packed the previous night, so she refused to blame herself.
He said that moment was real. “Are we really seeing our dog in our suitcase right now? Is that happening?” He asked. But they were also embarrassed and worried that airline executives might think they deliberately killed their dog.
The airline security officer, however, took care of him, but took it easy. Kathy Cooke offers to see Ikey and suggests that the couple continue on their vacation.
“They [Southwest employees] Helped us do everything we could to check our bags,” said Mr. Owenshandjob Saying that Ms Cook also checked on the couple as they went outside the airport to make a call to bring Ikki back home.
Eventually Mr. Owens’ uncle arrives at the airport to pick up Icky from the couple and return him home. The couple says that they went to Las Vegas to win money and believe that Ikey’s cute escape attempt was nothing but a good omen.
