Couple killed in train crash driving home from Thanksgiving dinner

An elderly couple were killed in a train collision in rural Kansas on Thursday night, according to local officials, as they were on their way home from their family’s Thanksgiving dinner.

At around 6:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, officials believe a slow-moving freight train hit the couple in their vehicle in Miami County.

When the train tried to stop, the vehicle was pushed down the tracks for a long distance. At some point, the vehicle caught fire, the officer told KCTV,

The elderly victim, who is from the Kansas City metro area, was on her way home from Thanksgiving dinner when the accident occurred. His adult son reportedly reached the spot after the accident.

“This is an emotional call for anyone involved,” said Captain Matthew Kelly with the Miami County Sheriff’s Office. According to KCTV. “Not just for the family but for us as well. No one wants to go on these calls. These are very painful for anyone involved. Anyone who has anything to do with it. I think it becomes even more painful on such a vacation. ,

He said his department has reached out to the victim’s family to offer any assistance.

Officials said the investigation – which would include checking whether the railways and lights of the crossing were working properly – was ongoing.
