The culture secretary has told a parliamentary committee that her own children are “lefty snowflakes”.

Nadine Doris claimed that she did not regularly use the insult, and that it was a “generic term”.

Asked what a “snowflake lefty” is, the cabinet minister told MPs on the culture committee: “Maybe my children.”

In a follow-up question she was asked what “Islington Lefty” was and she replied: “Again, one of my kids.” Ms Doris had previously claimed such people were “suppressing free speech”.

The culture secretary, known for her scintillating online postings, used her appearance to criticize the Brit Awards’ decision to eliminate separate award categories for men and women.

Artists such as Sam Smith and Will Young have previously called for the change to be more inclusive for non-binary artists.

The culture secretary said she had not heard of the policy change until she was asked about it at that committee hearing, and therefore would not comment.

However, she quickly changed her mind, terming it “tragic” and arguing that it would undermine women’s representation.

“I have to say this is the first time I know about it but I think it’s quite a sad decision. I want to see how it works out in terms of fair gender representation.”

“Again, I can’t give an opinion on that because it’s the first time I’ve heard of you. Women have been used for a very long time … if you want to see who used to do novels and many in the past. Winning prizes for things men have always dominated.
