A Louisiana sheriff’s deputy is under investigation after he was filmed allegedly slamming a black woman to the ground so that her ponytail ripped through her skull.
Shantel Arnold told investigators she encountered a Jefferson Parish sheriff’s deputy on her way home after being attacked by a group of boys on September 20.
Witnesses said they saw the officer exit his patrol car and slammed Ms Arnold, who is 4 feet 8 inches (1.42 m) and weighs 100 pounds (45 kg), to the ground by her hair.
The huge officer deputy is then seen kneeling on his back, in a clip that has been viewed nearly 300,000 times as of Tuesday.
As per the transcript of his interview with the police obtained by Nola.com, Ms. Arnold said: “I’m going to my house. I can’t make it to the block, the police come from nowhere, in a swarm, to me like, ‘Come here.’
“I’m like, ‘What’s going on? I just got beaten up by two kids, what would you do?'” she told investigators.
Incident, first reported by ProPublica in partnership with Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate, has caused a furious reaction in New Orleans.
“This video depicts a Jefferson Parish sheriff’s deputy engaging in brutal acts against an innocent woman,” said Alana Odoms, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana. Washington Post.
Ms Arnold said the deputy had kicked her family out of the house in the days following the incident, which she believed was an attempt to intimidate them.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is reportedly investigating the officer, but did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Granthshala.
The Sheriff’s Office is one of the largest law enforcement agencies that does not yet have body cameras. New Orleans residents and the department reportedly have long-standing tensions over past allegations of racist incidents involving the city’s black population.
