On August 21, more than 500 homes and 50 businesses were damaged after 17 inches of rain fell in less than 24 hours, tearing rising water through Humphries, Hickman, Houston and Dixon counties.

Parton chose the United Way of Humphries County to receive and distribute his donation, as suggested by his friend and fellow country music legend Loretta Lynn. Wayne Spears, a foreman at Lynn’s farm, was among those killed in the flood.
