Hawthorne, Calif. – Police are investigating the death of a man who was likely beaten to death by men who pulled him out of their truck after he missed hitting several patrons parked on the sidewalk.
Hawthorne The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said police received several calls about a vehicle trying to hit people parked on the sidewalk at around 12:10 a.m. Saturday.
According to the sheriff’s office, the driver had a verbal altercation inside the Rock It sports lounge and was asked to leave, but he soon returned driving his truck onto the sidewalk and nearly hit several people.
The man eventually lost control of the truck and hit a tree and a nearby business. Neighbors pulled the driver out of the car and a fight broke out. He died on the spot, though it is not yet clear whether the driver died during the fight or during the accident.
Authorities identified him as Miguel Lopez Santos, 40, of Los Angeles.
Hawthorne officers arrived within minutes of the call and found Santos apparently suffering from blunt force trauma.
Sheriff’s officials said four people were considered the prime suspects, but no details were released and no further information was available.
No arrests have been made.
