Mistakes at the start of the COVID pandemic, according to a new report, called the government’s initial policy “one of the most significant public health failures the UK has ever faced”.

Cabinet Office minister Stephen Barkley declined to apologize and insisted that the government “made decisions to move quickly” in the wake of the report’s publication.

A crossparty parliamentary committee study said Britain’s preparedness for the pandemic had focused too much on the flu and that ministers waited too long to move through lockdown measures in early 2020.

The lawmakers also said that herd immunity was not an official government strategy, but a “political approach of fatalism about the possibilities of COVID in the community”.
