The Dutch midfielder, 24, has been extremely disappointed in recent weeks, but Solskjaer has praised his professionalism in tackling his Old Trafford nightmare.

The Norwegian added: “It’s tough at the moment, I understand Donny. He’s disappointed, he’s disappointed.

“I know he’s not happy but he’s a top professional! He doesn’t let himself down and he knows how it works in football.”

Van de Beek has been linked with a move to newly-rich Newcastle, who will reportedly look to strengthen his squad in January with a return to Ajax.

But transfer guru Fabrizio Romano shut down rumors of a possible move to Amsterdam, despite revealing a high probability of leaving Utd in January.

He added: “Nothing is going on between Ajax and Manchester United for Donny van de Beek. Rumors about a possible return in January are considered ‘fake’ by all parties as things stand now.

“BTW, there are ‘big prospects’ for Donny to leave Man Utd in January.”

The Dutchman came through the Ajax academy before joining the first team in 2015, going on to make 175 appearances for the club before making a £39m switch to Old Trafford.

However, he has been linked most strongly with Everton, and it is learned that the Toffees investigated a possible loan deal over the summer, which was quickly turned down by Utd.

Everton’s director of football, Marcel Brands, is a huge fan of the midfielder and admitted that he is eager to save his compatriot from his current position.

Brands told Dutch radio: “We had Van de Beek on our wanted list. We asked United about him at the start of the transfer window, but a deal was not possible at the time.

“At the end of the window, I got a call from their agent, Guido Albers, who said Donny could join us on loan.

“But once again the deal was blocked at the last minute. You’re always dependent on the other club collaborating with you. It’s early October now, and a lot can happen with players getting injured.

“United is competing on many fronts, so it’s hard to say [if a deal can be done]. But of course it’s a great shame for Donnie. He is a very good player, no doubt about it.

“A guy like that wants to play regularly and get back into the Holland national team. But you know there’s a lot of pressure at a club like United – and there’s great competition for places.”

With key player Abdoulaye Doukoure facing a long spell on the sidelines due to a suspected leg break, Toffees will be desperate to fill the attacking void left by the Frenchman.

With two goals and four assists in eight league games, Doukoure has been brilliant for Everton in a more advanced role so far this season.

And van de Beek would be a natural replacement for the midfielder, having scored 28 goals and 24 assists in 118 Ajax appearances at the Eredivisie.

The Dutchman’s frustration finally came to a head when he threw his chewing gum to the ground in a fury late in the Champions League tie against Villarreal.

He was warming to the sidelines when the Red Devils chased down a winner, but was overlooked by Solskjaer, who decided to keep Jesse Lingard and Fred instead.

Van de Beek was furious with his manager’s decision and teammates Dean Henderson and Eric Bailey tried their best to console him as he collapsed in his seat.

Things got worse for the midfielder as he accidentally spilled a cup of tea on a UDT coach after Utd’s 4-2 loss at King Power Stadium last weekend as he tried to squeeze it into the tunnel,

As well as Everton, Newcastle and Ajax, Barcelona and Juventus have also been linked with a move for the 19-cap Netherlands international, who will be in high demand in January.
