Fans inside New York City’s Barkley Center roar in surprise disapproval during Friday night’s game between the New York Liberty and Washington Mystics of the WNBA. But it was not because of a great block in the paint; Instead, a fan declined her marriage proposal live in front of thousands of fans at the Jumbotron in Brooklyn Stadium.

Video of the incident shows a man in a New York Liberty jersey kneeling, talking to a woman standing nearby.

An announcer can be heard saying, “Say yes, baby.”

She leans over to kiss him, then grabs her things and quickly walks away, as the crowds are heard.

The identity of the couple is not known. While some speculated that the proposal was staged, those inside the arena believe it was real – and heartbreaking indeed.

Reporter Courtney Stith wrote on Twitter, “Ok, 30 seconds ago for this video was missing that girl clearly didn’t want to be on the Jumbotron.”

“We were all wondering if it was staged, but apparently it wasn’t. Maybe it will end offers in games (it was the fourth season this season in NY,” said basketball blogger @NYCScribbler added.

After the game, Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu, whose jersey adorned the future groom’s back, wrote “no way it was real” on her Instagram story.

“In no way was he dismissed like this in my jersey… I was hurt!” He continued. “Someone find this guy and let me sign his jersey!!!!!!”

The WNBA Playoffs begin on Thursday.
