Fatalities reported after gunman opens fire at university in Perm, Siberia

At least five people were killed and two injured in a shooting at a university campus in Perm, 700 miles east of Moscow, in Russia’s Urals.

A video shared online shows a vandal setting ablaze before entering building number 8. Other footage showed students jumping from windows on the building’s first floor. Dozens reportedly locked themselves in classes.

Just after 12 noon local time, police officers announced that they had taken the gunman into custody. Later reports said that he had died.

Local media identified him as 18-year-old Timur Bekmansurov. In a social media post written just before the attack, Mr. Bekmansurov explained the process of obtaining a shooting license and weapon – apparently successfully passing a psychiatric test – and said he chose the university because it had done so four years ago. “had made a serious mistake”.

The text depicts a young man in a distressed mental state.
