According to officials, the FBI is launching an investigation into the leak of confidential tax records that revealed the billionaires paid almost no federal income tax.
Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Charles Ratig told a Senate committee on Tuesday that the federal agency was investigating leaked tax records.
IRS Deputy Commissioner Douglas O’Donnell confirmed on Thursday that the US Treasury had “made investigative referrals to his Office of the Inspector General as well as the FBI”.
Referrals were also made to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia,” said Douglas O’Donnell.
He told the House Ways and Means Committee panel: “We fully support any investigation and will urge investigative officials to appropriately inform Congress of their findings”.
This comes after a report on Tuesday suggested that many of the world’s billionaires have paid almost no federal income tax in recent years, based on confidential tax records from the IRS.

“Our tax system is rigged for billionaires who don’t make their fortunes through income like working families do,” Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren tweeted. “The evidence is completely clear: It’s time the ultra-rich in America finally pay their fair share for #WealthTax.
In a joint letter, a group of Republican senators wrote: “[The] The Treasury and the IRS must hold accountable any and all individuals who have violated federal law by falsely sharing the confidential tax information and tax returns of many Americans.
