About 400 packages were found on private property near the city of Hayden last Wednesday. The Blount County Sheriff’s Office said they had questioned the suspected driver.

Sheriff Mark Moon wrote on Facebook on Tuesday that FedEx has become the “victim of six separate property thefts.”

“As of right now, we are looking at about 450 individual victims, some in Blount County, some not,” he said. “Investigators are trying to work on their cases. Shutting it down will not be an easy or fast matter.”

“In connection with the FedEx debacle, many questions are coming in, mainly from the media,” Sheriff Moon wrote on Facebook on Monday. “More to come, please be patient as we are currently getting into all the details. Any information we can share will be shared when we can share it. ,

Police have not disclosed the identity of the driver or if an arrest has been made, or if charges are likely to be filed.

FedEx said in a statement Tuesday that they are cooperating with authorities and that the driver is no longer on duty.

“The safety of our customers’ shipments is a top priority and we are committed to treating our customers’ packages with the utmost care,” the company said. “In addition to cooperating with law enforcement, we have reviewed this situation and can confirm that the person involved is no longer providing service on behalf of FedEx Ground.”

“We are sorry for the inconvenience caused by this situation and appreciate the understanding of our customers during the package retrieval process,” he said. “Where possible, retrieved packages are being delivered to the intended recipients.”

“In the event of a damaged shipment, we will make every effort to work with affected shippers to reach a solution,” FedEx said.

The packages were discovered in the northern parts of the state about 30 miles north of Birmingham.

The sheriff’s office watched the packages until FedEx trucks arrived to retrieve them.
