Manchester City are said to be in pole position to sign Ronaldo on a two-year contract this summer.
However, it is believed that the deal fell through as the club was unwilling to pay the proposed fee set by Juventus.
Additionally, the Premier League giants would require Ronaldo to significantly reduce his £500,000-a-week salary.
Therefore, Manchester United swooped in and signed a further two-year deal with an option for one more year. The deal cost the Red Devils £12.9m, with £6.9m to follow in add-ons.
After the transfer debacle, Fernandinho has outlined how close City had come to signing the superstar. when he talked to ESPN, he added: ‘I think there was a good, quite a chance.

‘I think Bernardo Silva, given the situation of Joao Canelo, Ederson, his agent at the club renewing the contracts of Ruben Dias was here.
‘Obviously, if you’re at the table, you can talk about everything and every possible player.’
Fernandinho also said he thought the pressure to sign the forward and the expectations set on the club were to blame for the deal’s collapse.
He said: ‘I think the prospect of him coming here also raised a lot of expectations.
‘There is no doubt that this affects not only the fans, but also the people inside the club.

Manchester United are in the race for a major trophy this season after bolstering their squad with the likes of Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.
Ronaldo has already made an impact on the team – scoring three goals in two games for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
As a result, many have touted him for winning the Champions League of his years despite his failure in the Europa League final in the previous stint in Gdansk.
However, Fernandinho still believes Manchester City have what it takes to dominate Europe.
He said: ‘If you’re going to compare name to name, I think it’s very level. Both the teams have a very good team. Perhaps one or the other will wash away very small gains.
‘But I think that, because of the level of the game, the way we played with Pepe for five or six years [Guardiola]We have a defined standard of play, we know exactly how each player behaves or should behave on the pitch.

“We know about the quality of each player and how he can play the best part in matches. No doubt we have got a little more advantage in this matter.
‘Having practically the same player since 2017, it is no surprise that the club has managed to win three titles in the last five.
‘But without a doubt United, because of history, the weight of the shirt, the quality of the players, in a short time can reach the level we are at today.’
