A Florida deputy was shot and wounded Tuesday in Pensacola by a man who was detained by law enforcement, who was later killed in a clash, according to officials.

Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons said the unnamed deputy had a leg injury. The deputy was taken to a regional hospital and his injuries appear to be non-life threatening.

The shooting took place in the 3200 block of La Rua Street around 7 pm when members of the ECSO’s Gun Crime Unit were searching for a suspect in the area of ​​Pensacola.

Simmons said representatives were questioning a man not related to the murder investigation when the man reached into his waistband and began to “mess around”.

A scuffle ensued after the deputy tried to find out what the man was doing. Police said the man pulled out a weapon and shot the deputy in the leg.

The deputy opened fire, hit and killed the man.

“We would hope nothing like this would ever happen,” Simmons said, “but we know that’s not the reality.”
