Former Fresno-area police officer charged with series of on-duty sexual assaults

A former police officer in Fresno County faces federal charges after officers said he sexually assaulted four women while on active duty as a law enforcement officer.

The US Justice Department said Friday that a federal grand jury found Corcoran’s J. DeShawn Torrence, accusing him of depriving him of constitutional rights under color of law.

Torrance, 38, “engaged in various forms of non-consensual sexual conduct, ranging from instructing a victim to remove her clothing without a valid law enforcement purpose, to forcing her victims to engage in sexual acts.” for, all while serving as a police officer,” the federal official said.

Officials said the incidents happened several times from August 2017 to June 2021, when he worked as an officer in the Sengar police department.

Torrance is no longer employed by the department.

The four counts carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment and a $250,000 fine, according to officials.

Officials said Torrence faces a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and up to one year in prison in another case, and a fine of up to $100,000 in the remaining five counts, officials said.
