Health Secretary Sajid Javid warned at a Downing Street press conference on Wednesday that the pandemic was “not over” and said Covid cases could soon reach 100,000 a day.

Although refusing to roll out the government’s Plan B strategy – which includes the return of some social distancing measures and asking people to work from home – Mr Javid said that if everyone wants to limit the spread of Covid If it doesn’t play its part to help, then sanctions will be more likely.

Dr Jenny Harris, chief executive of the UK Health Protection Agency (UKHSA), also warned that the number of Covid deaths was “moving in the wrong direction”.

She said at the briefing that “small behavioral changes in all of us”, such as wearing face masks and getting booster jabs, could help reduce the R number – currently from 0.9 in England to 1.1.

Addressing the fully vaccinated people, she said: “Don’t think that there is no face covering, face covering is. Maybe you have an infection with you and you don’t know it. This is really important.

“Children are massively infected and so if people adopt those behaviors and we keep the vaccination rate up and the kids are up for their vaccinations, I think the R rate could be, we all Can reduce it under one.”

It comes as the latest government figures show the UK has recorded nearly 50,000 new cases as of 9am on Wednesday, with 179 more people dying of Covid.

Hospital admissions in the past seven days averaged 868, an increase of 11% from 780 a week ago.

Mr Javid said at the press conference that everyone has a “role to play” in limiting the spread of Covid.

“Am I saying that if we don’t do our job, get vaccinated, all the behavior changes we can, that we’re more likely to face sanctions when winter arrives? Then I’m saying Am.

“If not enough people get their booster jabs, if not enough of the people who were eligible for the original offer, then the five million I talked about, if they don’t come forward, if people don’t get masks. don’t wear. To be in a really crowded place with a lot of people they don’t normally hang out with, if they’re not washing their hands and stuff, it’s going to affect us all.

“And it’s certainly more likely that we’re going to have more restrictions.

“Now we want to avoid them. We’ve determined what those restrictions might look like, for example we’ve set Plan B restrictions. And we all want to avoid them. So we’ve all got to play a part. “
