Investigators on Sunday discovered a body consistent with Gabby Petito’s description, but stopped short of confirming a positive ID of her remains. The 22-year-old’s family reported her missing last week, after a month-long cross-country road trip.

June-July 2021: Petito posts first photos of road trip from Kansas

“The last two nights camping in Zion have been really good,” she wrote. “We climbed about 100° here and it was great to be back at our campsite, watching the sky fill with dark clouds, and lightning storms in a nice cool breeze of light rain.”

July 21-22, 2021: Petito posted photos from Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

August 12, 2021: Police encounter outside Arches National Park, Utah

Petito posted his last Instagram photo, which appears to be from Utah. Her mother, Nicole Schmidt, said that her daughter had called her from Grand Teton National Park, and that it would be the young woman’s last call to her family.

August 27, 2021: Bound for Yellowstone?

September 1, 2021: Laundry returns to Florida

September 11, 2021: Petito’s mother reports his disappearance to New York officials

Nicole Schmidt reported her daughter’s disappearance to the Suffolk County Police Department in New York after she was unable to contact him.

September 19, 2021: FBI says body found in Grand Teton National Park matches Petito’s description

The FBI announced that a body found near Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming matched Petito’s description.

While the investigation was still on, officials said they still have not identified the body as 100% positive.

“The FBI and our allies extend our heartfelt condolences to Gabby’s family and loved ones,” the FBI said in a statement.

The cause of death was yet to be ascertained.
