Staff searching Bridger-Teton National Park for a Florida woman reported missing earlier this month found a body there, the local coroner said, but has yet to identify the remains.
Gabby Pettito, 22, hasn’t been seen since returning home from a cross-country trip without her boyfriend, Brian Laundry. Laundry is designated a “person of interest” in his disappearance.
“We don’t have a gender, we don’t have an identity,” Dr Brent Blue of Teton County, Wyoming, the coroner’s office told Reuters.
The FBI’s Denver office said it would provide an update on Petito’s case at 4 p.m. Mountain Time. (6 p.m. Eastern)
Petito and Laundry left New York on their road trip in June, heading west in a white van and planning to visit national parks along the way and document the trip on social media.
Petito posted his last photo on August 25. Her family believes she was on her way to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming when they last heard from her.
Laundry, who lives with 22-year-old Petito in North Port, about 70 miles (110 miles) south of St Petersburg on Florida’s west coast, has declined to speak to investigators.
His family told police on Friday that they had not seen him for three days. Florida Police and FBI agents spent the weekend searching for him in a nearby forest area.
Petito was last seen leaving a hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah.
