game of Thrones Fans have paid tribute to late musician Wilco Johnson, who played Ser Ilyin Payne in the HBO series.

The beloved singer-songwriter and guitarist of Dr Feelgood died aged 75 on Monday (21 November). game of Thrones Since then social media has been honoring his memory.

“Great musician who made a terrible Illyn Payne, but by all accounts she was a much nicer person than the character portrayed on #GameOfThrones. RIP, Wilco,” tweeted one fan.


“I didn’t know the guy who played Sir Ilyin Payne was the guitarist. RIP man”, wrote another.

A later tribute reminded fans that Payne was one of the characters Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) pledged to kill during season one to avenge her father’s execution: “Now on Arya’s list No. Illene Payne. Tearing”.

The news of Johnson’s death was confirmed through a post on his official social media accounts.

The tribute read: “This is the announcement we never wanted to make, and we do so with a very heavy heart: Wilco Johnson has died.

“He passed away at home on Monday 21 November. Thank you for respecting the privacy of the family at this very sad time. RIP Wilco Johnson.

Johnson was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer in 2013, saying through a statement from his manager at the time that he did not wish to receive treatment or chemotherapy.

The following year however, Johnson underwent an operation and declared himself cancer-free, later revealing that he had been told he only had 10 months to live and commented: “I shouldn’t be here at all”. “
