Messi, however, graciously acknowledged that last year’s award should have gone Lewandowski, who missed under controversial circumstances.

The Bayern star was the top favorite to win the Ballon d’Or 12 months ago, only to have the organizers canceled the prize due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In his acceptance speech, Messi paid tribute to the Poland international.

‘Robert, you deserve your Ballon d’Or,’ said the Paris Saint-Germain forward.

‘Last year, everyone agreed to say that you were the big winner of this award.’

Lineker echoed the Argentine’s views and suggested that Lewandowski, who claimed the Striker of the Year award on Monday, should be honored retrospectively from last year’s laurels.

The Match of the Day host tweeted, ‘I think the 2020 Ballon d’Or should be retroactively awarded to Robert Lewandowski last year.

‘He deserved to win it. He deserves one.’

In a separate tweet, the former England international said: ‘Messi agrees. Messi right. Give the prize to Robert Lewandowski. So easy to do, and to do the right thing.’

While he missed the Ballon d’Or, Lewandowski won the best FIFA men’s player last year after an astonishing 2019-20 campaign in which he scored a combined 47 times for club and country.

The 33-year-old’s goal propelled Bayern to a famous treble as the Bavarian giants won the Champions League, DFB-Pokal and eighth consecutive Bundesliga title.

Lewandowski added another Bundesliga title last season – his seventh consecutive – smashing 48 goals in 40 appearances in all competitions and breaking the late Gerd Müller’s record for most goals scored in a Bundesliga season with 41.

The Poland captain has continued in a similar fashion this season, netting 25 times in 20 matches in all competitions so far for Bayern.

Meanwhile, Messi took two clear of Cristiano Ronaldo’s tally of five Ballon d’Ors with his latest win.

However, not everyone was convinced that the Argentine, who left Barcelona for PSG in the summer, deserved the award.

Several journalists, including Simon Stone, Taylor Twelman and Sea Lloyd, suggested that the award should have been given to Lewandowski as he had missed it last year.

Meanwhile, Piers Morgan argued that Messi was not “even among the top two players in PSG”.

The 34-year-old joined PSG on a free transfer in the summer after winning the Spanish Cup in his final season with Barcelona and finishing as LaLiga’s top scorer.

However, more importantly, he won the Copa América with Argentina, which was Albiceleste’s first major trophy since 1993.

‘It’s incredible to be here again. Two years ago I thought it was the last time. Winning the Copa America was important,’ Messi said on Monday.

‘It’s a special year for me with this Copa America title. Winning at the Maracan stadium meant a lot and I was very happy to celebrate with the Argentine people.

‘I don’t know if this is the best year of my life, I’ve had a long career. But it was a special one with the title with Argentina after tough times and criticism.
