Google will release a new smartwatch next year to take on the Apple Watch

According to new reports, Google is making a smartwatch to compete with the Apple Watch to be launched in 2022.

The wearable, codenamed “Rohan”, will be round without any physical bezels. Watch development has reportedly accelerated this year, with several employees outside of the smartwatch team testing the device inside Google.

While the watch is referred to internally as a “pixel clock” or an “Android clock”, it is unclear what name Google will ultimately decide on. insider Report.


Google bought wearable company Fitbit in January 2021, and although the health and fitness company will eventually manufacture devices running Wear OS, Google does not intend to bring this new device under the Fitbit brand.

Fitbit and Google will work together in the future, merging the Fitbit and Wear OS software.

“It’s a pretty straight mirror of the Apple Health stack,” said one employee. “It looks like Google is looking to catch up with the Apple HealthKit ecosystem, and is rearranging everything in a futuristic sense to get there.”

The watch is expected to launch next year, possibly in the spring, but that date has not been set. However, it is expected to cost more than the Fitbit, according to ledge,

Android wearables have yet to reach the level of interoperability between the Apple Watch’s phone and the Watch. Currently the most advanced Android smartwatch is Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4, which runs on a combination of Wear OS 3 and Samsung’s older Tizen operating system.

However, the device is only updated to the latest software, and prefers Samsung’s own services over Google’s.

Facebook is also making its own smartwatch to compete in the space, with reports indicating it will have two cameras and capture health and fitness data.
