Republican Senator James Risk of Idaho has engaged in a bizarre exchange with Secretary of State Anthony Blinken over whether anyone in the Biden administration has a button to cut off the president’s mic while he is speaking.
Mr Risk, who is a ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said anyone in the White House has the authority to press a button and cut the audio from the president’s microphone.
Mr Blinken, who was witnessing the United States’ exit from Afghanistan, laughed at the question.
“I think anyone who knows the chairman, including the members of this committee, knows that he speaks for himself very clearly and very deliberately, no one else does,” he said. Mr. Blinken said.
Mr Risk responded by saying he saw it happen on Monday and that it had happened several times before, which has also ignited media reports.
“It is widely reported that someone has the ability to press a button and cut off his voice to prevent him from speaking,” he said. “Who is that person?”
Republicans said this happened as recently as Monday when Mr Biden spoke at the Interagency Fire Center in the state of Idaho in Mr Risk.
“Are you telling this committee that this doesn’t happen? There’s no one in the White House who pushes a button and cuts it mid-sentence,” he asked.
Mr. Blinken reiterated what he had said during his testimony.
“Senator, I really don’t know what you’re talking about,” said Mr. Blinken.
