The Etihad boss says he is down from his final ’14 or 15 players’ ahead of a crucial month in the race for the Premier League title.

Grealish will not start back on his first visit to Villa Park after missing the last four games due to a muscle injury – but could be taken back to the bench to face his old club.

City boss Guardiola, who likes to play with the ‘false nine’, said: “We are in an emergency in the squad. We have some, some, some people and Aym is out.

“I have a lot of confidence in the team and the other players come but we are in real trouble for December – the hardest month of the year – because we have some, few players.

“Phil Foden and Jack might be able to play a few minutes, we’ll talk to the doctors about it.

“But we only have 14 or 15 players.”

Kevin de Bruyne and Ferran Torres are not set to visit Villa Park, while centre-back Aymeric Laporte has been suspended.

Grealish has made a low-key start to his City career following his record-breaking £100million move in August.

Guardiola’s signings often require a season to find their feet – but he doesn’t want to wait a year to see the best from Grealish.

Asked if it could happen next season when he sees the real Grealish, Guardiola said: “I don’t think so – he’ll be in trouble. We’ll have to see it now.”

“We have six or seven months ahead of us. I absolutely don’t think it will be next season before we see the best of him.

“I want to see it this season.”

Since moving to the Etihad in the summer, Grealish has made far more headlines on the front pages than on the previous pages.

His friendship with actress Emily Atack and Love Island star Amber Gill has put his personal life in the limelight.

But Pep insists that his lifestyle is not an issue, adding: “For me, no, because I know how perfect he lives his life. I have no doubt about it.”

“I talk with the players every time they come in July and I’m so demanding that every training session be the best and every single game.

“There’s no friendly game, there’s no game you don’t play well.”
