Studio Ghibli legend Hayao Miyazaki is coming out of retirement to make another film.

Confirmed by animator and filmmaker new York Times that he will direct a new feature-length project called How do you live, Genzaburo is based on Yoshino’s 1937 novel.

Miyazaki initially announced his retirement in 2013, but then returned to make a short film for the Ghibli Museum and his grandson Goro Miyazaki, who had most recently directed. earwig and the witch,


Goro had said that he believed his father returned to filmmaking because he “basically needed to create something to live for.” when asked by Times As for why he would be making another feature, Hayao said: “Because I wanted to.”

Details about the new film have been kept secret, with Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki calling the project “a grand scale fantasy”.

“The title of your next movie is ‘How do you live?,'” I say. “Will you answer us?”

“I’m making this movie because I don’t have the answer,” Miyazaki also told the publication when asked how he would interpret the question (“How do you live?”) himself.

Discussing the future of animation, Goro reveals Granthshala Last year a combination of CGI technology and hand-drawn techniques may have been the way to go.


“I would say that after trying out 3D CGI here at Studio Ghibli, it was a plus that we found out we were able to do it. When you look at Soul Animation and 3D Animation, obviously these two are different. There are different art forms.”
