The cost of holiday flights will hit a five-year high this year, according to the latest analysis by fare-tracking platform Hopper, released Monday.

Hopper’s chief economist Hayley Berg said in his 2022, “Critical factors including jet fuel prices, fewer flights scheduled and two years of halted holiday travel demand drive Thanksgiving and Christmas airfares this year to the highest level in the past 5 years.” Will go.” Holiday Travel Outlook Report,

Flight delays and cancellations have been at their worst during the holidays.

The price of plane tickets has skyrocketed in recent months, even as passengers face a wave of flight disruptions and cancellations. As the COVID-19 pandemic eases, airlines are scrambling to meet high demand despite pilots and flight crew shortages, high fuel costs and other supply chain difficulties.

Disruptions have been at their worst during peak holiday travel weekends such as Fourth of July and Labor Day, each of which produced a slew of cancellations at airports across the country.

According to data from Hopper, domestic flights are selling for an average of $350 per ticket on the Thanksgiving holiday this year. This figure shows an increase of 43% compared to the price of holidays last year and 22% compared to the pre-pandemic holiday travel season in 2019.

Prices are stable for international fliers, with an average price of $795 per ticket this Thanksgiving – up 41% from last year.

Tickets are even more expensive over the Christmas holiday, with the average domestic airfare selling for $463 per ticket as of mid-September. Christmas plane tickets are 39% more expensive than last year.

For international travelers, Christmas plane tickets cost an average of $1,300.

According to Berg, travelers who book their trips early see the biggest savings.

Domestic flights are 43% more expensive on Thanksgiving.

“Despite significant travel recovery since the peak of the pandemic, travelers continue to plan trips closer to their departure dates than before the pandemic,” Berg wrote.

Higher airfares continue to be a major burden on the household budget as inflation has risen over the previous year. According to federal data, airfares showed signs of improvement in July, falling 7.8%.

However, the airfare cost was still higher by 27.7% compared to the same month a year ago.

The Biden administration has increased pressure on American airlines to deal with deteriorating flight conditions. Several carriers have recently updated their customer service plans to make it clear that passengers are entitled to free meals and accommodation in the event of long delays or cancellations that are at their airline’s fault.

As The Post reports, travelers have experienced an increase in wrongful baggage incidents over the past year, with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines among the worst offenders.
