This is the terrifying moment when lifeguards dragged a bloodied teenager out of the ocean after his penis was bitten by a shark.
18-year-old Jose Ernestor da Silva was swimming on Piedade Beach on the northeast coast of Brazil when the shock occurred.
According to reports, the lifeguards stationed at the beach had asked the 18-year-old boy to come closer to the shore as soon as the shark struck.
In the footage, lifeguards are seen jumping into shark-infested waters to rescue Jose.
They drag him onto the sand, where he gasps for air as a lifeguard grabs his head and tells him to “breathe.”
Lifeguards saw Jose’s injuries completely before he was laid on the sand.
The teenager’s shorts are completely ripped as they appear lifeless on the beach.
Tragically, the teen died on the way to the hospital.
Miguel Arcanzo, director of the Restoracao Hospital in Recife, said of the 2018 attack: “He fell unconscious, with a very extensive, very severe wound.
“After the surgery, which ended at around 9.30, he was admitted to the ICU.
“She lost a lot of blood, which was replaced, but she suffered hypovolemic shock and didn’t resist.”
Rodrigo Matias of Recife’s fire department said Jose was swimming with his brother and friends in deep water near shore, an area with warning signs of shark attacks.
Seeing that the group was drifting ahead, lifeguards called for them to return to the shallow water.
He said: “Just when the lifeguard told him to come closer to the beach, he was bitten.”
Ambulance doctor Wagner Monteiro said first that Jose had suffered a heart attack after arriving at the local Aeronautica hospital, and second when he was being taken to the Restouracao hospital in the center of Recife.
He said: “His femur and his penis were cut off by the shark’s bite. He has lost a lot of blood and is in critical condition.”
Jose’s mother Elisangela dos Anjos, 42, told Brazil’s JC Online website that he had gone to the beach without her knowledge, and only learned about it when his brother Ezequiel called her from the beach after the attack.
Speaking from the hospital, she said: “He would go in secret because he knew I thought it was dangerous. I wasn’t worried because I thought he was somewhere around the house.
“I went crazy when I heard about it, all the neighbors heard me screaming.”
The footage was filmed in 2018, but has recently resurfaced due to the number of shark attacks.
In July, a drunk man was killed by a shark after walking into the ocean to urinate on a Brazilian beach.
And 15 days later at the same place a swimmer was killed by a shark.
